Heidelberg's geographical terrain caters for both the novice and the serious cyclist. Routes in and around Heidelberg are easily accessible, and the route in the town itself is quite an easy one to ride. The route in Heidelberg takes you through part of the residential area as well. Here one can see historic buildings and beautiful scenery as the route takes one into a section of the  GROOTVADERSBOSCH CONSERVANCY area.

The route through town forms part of the GROOTVADERSBOSCH CONSERVANCY Mountain Bike Trails programme and a permit is required if you are planning to do the entire route.

Permits are available from an "honesty depot" in the form of a brightly painted pink fridge outside the library in Heidelberg, opposite the police station in Van Riebeeck Street; or one may purchase a permit via SNAPSCAN. The SNAPSCAN code is on the pink fridge.

One day or annual permits are available for the cyclist.
